Obituary for Bertha Levant
Mrs. Bertha Louise McCray Levant, was the fifth of five siblings born on March 12, 1940, to the union of the late Mr. Powell McCray and the late Mrs. Bertrice Simmons McCray. She was born and reared in Evans County (Daisy) Georgia. Both of her parents and all of her siblings preceded her in death. Early as a young child, she accepted the Lord as her Savior and became a member of Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church of Daisy, GA. In 1957, she graduated from Evan County High School with honors as a valedictorian. She excelled in academics and sports as a participant of the basketball and track teams. In 1960, she married Homesilee Primous and from that union, six children were conceived. They relocated from Georgia and raised their children in Brooklyn, New York. In New York, Bertha became a faithful member of the Southern Baptist Church under the leadership of the Reverend Clarence Williams. She later joined St. Paul Community Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of the Reverend Dr. Johnny Ray Youngblood. Bertha joined the Women’s Ministry of St. Paul Community and was certified as an evangelist and teacher. Her passion for teaching excelled through St. Paul Community Baptist and later through Hamilton Memorial, Mount Pleasant Missionary and Sams Creek Baptist Churches. She faithfully served for 12 years at St. Paul Community until leaving to care for her mother in Daisy, GA. While in Georgia, Bertha reunited with the Historic Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. L. Perry McNeal. In 1994, she met the love of her life, the Reverend Johnny Levant, who was servicing at the Hamilton Memorial United Methodist Church in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Their love for God’s word and their friendship blossomed into a love and compassion for each other. They married in December 2000 and relocated in the spring of 2003 to their home in Daisy, GA. The Reverend Johnny Levant was installed to the pastoral leadership of Sams Creek Baptist Church in October 2006. As the First Lady of Sams Creek Baptist Church, Bertha served tirelessly and faithfully until her illness in 2012.
