Obituary for Bobby Carlie, Sr.
Deacon Bobby Carlie, Sr. was born November 4, 1951 to the late Mr. Charlie Lee Newkirk and to Mrs. Minnie Newkirk. He attended the public schools of Candler County, he is a 1970 graduate of Lillian Street High School. He was married to Barbara (Hassie) Gardner and to this union two children were born, LaToya and Bobby, Jr. Deacon Carlie was employed at RR Donnelly, formerly known as Wallace Computer Service. Deacon Carlie retired from Wallace after thirty-three years of service, where he broke several production records on collator #11. He joined Mercer Grove Baptist Church at an early age, where he served faithfully. In 1998, 2005, 2012, and 2016 he and his family received the Family of the Year award at Mercer Grove. Deacon Carlie served as the Chairman of the Deacon Board at Mercer Grove and the Treasurer of the Deacons Ministry Union. An active member of the community, Deacon Carlie was the President of the Middleview Ushers Convention. He was named the Civic Person of the Year in 2006 by the Rose Metter Garden Club Chapter #249. In 2000, he was recognized as the Most Valuable Mason of the Year by the Statesboro Masonic District #18. In 1999, he received a Dedicated Service plaque from the Mason Lodge #401, Metter, Georgia. Deacon Bobby Carlie was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerome Griffin and Ricky Newkirk; two sisters, Patricia Newkirk and Sarah Newkirk-Haffaney; one aunt, Pearl Mincey, entered into eternal rest a few days after Deacon Carlie. Deacon Bobby Carlie, Sr. leaves the following loves ones to cherish his memory: his mother, Mrs. Minnie Newkirk of Metter, GA; three children: Mr. Marquis Carlie of Metter, GA; Mrs. LaToya Thomas (Tarvis “Chip”) of Bellville, IL and Mr. Bobby Carlie, Jr. of Metter, GA; three grandchildren: Tarvis “Ethan” Thomas, Madison Thomas and Marjanay Carlie; three brothers: Mr. Charles Newkirk of Metter, GA, Mr. Billy Newkirk (Patricia) of Dale City, VA, and Deacon Robert Newkirk (Sally) of Millen, GA; one sister, Mrs. Loretta Mikell (Fred) of Metter, GA; one aunt, Ms. Eula Carlie of Miami, FL; three brothers-in-law: Mr. Terry Lanier (Jennifer) of Stillmore, GA, Mr. Billy Lanier of Metter, GA, and Mr. Jimmy Byrd of South Bend, IN; two sisters-in-law: Mrs. Ann Dekle (Cornelius) of Stillmore, GA and Mrs. Fronita Rencher (Wes) of Charleston, SC; and a host of loving and caring nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
