Obituary for Della Mae Coney
Ms. Della Mae Coney was born on June 13, 1954 in Statesboro Georgia to the late Mr. Ira Willie Coney and the late Mrs. Idella King Coney. She was a graduate of Portal High School in Portal, Georgia, and after high school, Della moved to Metter, Georgia.
In furthering her education, Della attended Swainsboro Technical College, where she received an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education. While earning her degree, Della worked at Claxton Poultry for over ten years. She later began a career as an educator at Candler County Head Start in Metter, Georgia. In 1996 Della became employed by the Candler County school district, where she educated, mentored, nurtured and loved countless generations of children for twenty-four years. She served as the Girls Basketball Coach at Metter Middle School and at Metter High School she was the Girls B-Team Basketball Coach, Girls Varsity Basketball Coach and Basketball Varsity Cheerleaders Coach.
Della was a dedicated member of Tremount Temple Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as a member of the Senior Choir. Because she was a devoted mother and caregiver to many, she raised her children in the church and made sure they were present for church services and activities. She also served as a member of the NAACP, Order of Eastern Star, Social Savings Club, and Women Empowering Women Virtual Ministry.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira Willie and Idella King Coney; her sister, Rose Marie Coney; her brothers: Willie Arthur Coney, Steve Eldon Coney, and James Ira Coney; and her granddaughter McKenzie Faith Marks.
Della Mae is survived by a special friend, Mr. Henry Joe McCullough of Metter, GA; her children; Mr. Reco Colando Coney (Hillary), Mr. Patrick Cornelius Coney (Cora), Mr. Darrell Roosevelt Coney, and Ms. Dominique Demetric Coney, all of Metter, GA; she was also a mother to: a granddaughter, Miss Darrayanna Kechelle Coney of Metter, GA; four nephews and nieces: Mr. Antonio Coney, Mr. Edward Laquan Jordan (Kendall), Ms. Veronica Lashaun Jordan, and Ms. Tashia Tamara Jordan, all of Metter, GA; thirteen siblings: Mrs. Willie Pearl Jones (James) of Twin City GA, Mrs. Jewel Lynn Shipman (Willie) of Register GA, Ms. Betty Anne Lanier and Mr. Tony Coney, both of Metter GA, Mrs. Mary Ann Addison (Curtis) and Ms. Gwen Elizabeth Coney, both of Statesboro GA, Mr. Leo Coney, Mr. Theolus Levern Coney of Metter GA, Mr. Willie Coney (Minnie) of Collins GA, Mr. Randy Coney (Michelle), Mr. Vine Lee Coney, Mr. Isaac Coney, and Ms. Mary Faye Johnson, all of Metter GA; aunts and uncles: Mrs. Queenie Jameson (Leon) of Metter, GA, Mrs. Josie Smith (Willie) of Miami FL, Mr. Waldo Coney of Metter GA, and Mr. Leo Coney (Trish) of Homestead FL; sixteen grandchildren, and a host of loving and caring nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.
