Obituary for Horace Lovett
Horace James (Chubby) Lovett, Sr., was born to the late John Henry and Margaret Moore Lovett in Savannah, Georgia on December 9, 1948. He joined First Metropolitan Baptist Church at an early age. He later joined the House of Bread, in Savannah, GA. In 2003, he was ordained, and served as deacon of the church for three years.
Horace attended Chatham County Public Schools graduating in 1966 from Woodville-Tompkins High School in West Savannah. At Tompkins, he excelled in football and baseball earning a four-year scholarship to Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida becoming an All American Lineman and kicker for The Rattlers. After leaving FAMU, he became an active member in the Woodville Tompkins Alumni Association. In 2005, he was inducted into the Woodville-Tompkins Hall of Fame for football.
After a short stint with the Atlanta Braves farm team and the Savannah Police Department, Horace drove for UPS. He would later become an Excursion Charter bus driver, until his health failed him in 2006.
Preceding him in death are his parents and a brother Robert (Bobby) Lovett.
Cherishing his memories are his six children: Jaudon (Michael) McCrary of Powder Springs, Georgia; Horace “Sean” J. Lovett Jr. (Sarah) of San Jose, California; Janyelle Lovett (Mario) of Charlotte, NC; Jalivia Lovett of Atlanta, Georgia; Jeremy (Shaira) Lovett of Beaufort, South Carolina; Jason Lovett of Atlanta, Georgia: and the mothers of his children: Amanda McCray Lovett Gadson of Metter, Georgia; Hattie (Robert) Brunson of San Jose, California. Nine grandchildren: Justin, Janessa, Nicolas, Michael, Jaden, Justice, Michael, Jacai and Jaia. Two sisters; Willie Mae Major (Ernest), Donna Stroman (Ricky) both of Savannah, Georgia; and one brother John Henry Lovett Jr.; Several nieces and nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.
