Obituary for Leroy Jones
Mr. Leroy Jones was born April 6, 1944 to the late Mr. Harold Jones, Sr. and the late Mrs. Annie Mae Mikell Jones in Manassas, GA. He was a member of the United House of Prayer for All People, Bellville, GA all of his life. He moved to Newark, NJ after graduating from high school. In 1964, Leroy decided to “Be All He Could Be” and enlisted into the U.S. Army. He served proudly for 28 years and retired as a Sergeant Major. His stateside and overseas duty station include: Fort Dix, NJ, Fort Jackson, SC, Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Carson, CO, Fort Hood, TX, Fort Bliss, TX, Fort Meade, MD, Fort Richardson, AK, Fort Wainwright, AK, Fort Lee, VA; Germany, Korea, Panama, Okinawa, Japan and Hawaii Leroy received numerous decorations, medals, badges and citation awards during his 28 years of service in the U.S. Army: Presidential Unit Citation, Overseas Service Ribbon, Parachute Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Unit Citation Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon. He also attended the USA Sergeant Major’s Academy for 23 weeks. Leroy retired in Fort Lee and remained in Virginia until his death. He was a proud US Army Veteran and he loved his family . He was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Terrance Jones, two sisters: Catherine Perry and Emma Lee Elliott; and seven brothers: George Jones, Walter Jones, Johnny Jones, William Jones, Cecil Jones, Arthur Jones and Harley Felton Jones. He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Mrs. Janice Jones, two children: Mr. Eric (Mary) Heck of Los Angeles, CA; Major Shyra (Carl) Cullins of Houston, TX; two step-children: Mrs. Twila (Anthony Sr.) Smith of Navarre, FL and Mr. Nekemia O. Guinn (Known as Omar) of Chester, VA. Six grandchildren: Malia, Demetris, Kaylia, Anthony Jr., Carl Jr. and Jasmine; two brothers: Mr. Harold (Mable) Jones, Jr. and Mr. Herman Mikell, both of Claxton, GA and one sister: Ms. Betty Bryant of South Ozone Park, NY; one niece Mrs. Patricia (Robert) Sapp, raised as a sister; and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins, too numerous to name. However, he had a special bond with his niece Mrs. Annette M. Sneed and nephew Mr. Arnold E. Jones. They were close their entire lives and communicated often.
