Obituary for Robertha Byrd McClain
Mrs. Robertha Byrd McClain, age 81, was granted her angel wings on Saturday, July 24, 2021. She was born December 9, 1939 to the late Houston and Bertha Bacon Byrd. Robertha was the youngest of eight children. Six of her siblings preceded her in death: John Brook Byrd, Warnell Byrd, Bernice B. Byrd, Geneva Byrd Gibson, Ronald Georgie, and Lottie Byrd Owens; as well as her only child, Melissa Byrd.
Robertha joined Sams Creek Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. In 1959, she graduated from the Candler County Training School in Metter, Georgia. After graduation, she attended Albany State College before making her home in New York. While living in New York, she worked for the US Postal Service and served as a caregiver for two special nephews, Francisco Matos and Tyreik Richardson. Robertha also became a member of St. Luke Cathedral Church in Laurelton, New York.
She was married to Kenneth McClain of Riverdale, New York. Robertha will be lovingly remembered by one brother, U.L. Byrd of Ft.Lauderdale, FL; one sister, Eppie Brown of Laurelton, NY; one sister-in-law, Carolyn George of Twin City, Georgia; one brother-in-law, Sammie Owens of Orangeburg, SC; a special niece, Jacinda Porter Brown of Flushing, NY; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
