Obituary for Ruby Jenkins
Ruby Lee Merrion Jenkins was born to the late Elder Lucious Merrion and Lizzie Green Merrion on January 1, 1921 in Jefferson County, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Buster” Jenkins, and her son, Larry Jenkins. One brother, Rev. Lucious Merrion, also preceded her in death. Ruby was educated in the public schools of Swainsboro, Georgia, where she graduated from Swainsboro Industrial High. She was also a graduate of the University of the State of New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She was employed by Queens General Hospital in the Neonatal Department for over thirty years. Mrs. Ruby Jenkins joined St. Philip Baptist Church at an early age. She became a member of Grace United Methodist Church during her tenure in New York. Upon her retirement and return to Swainsboro, she became an active member at St. Philip. She founded the St. Philip Nurses Guild and started the practice of handing out palms on Palm Sunday. Surviving family members include: one loving brother, Mr. Charlie Merrion (Leola) of Swainsboro, GA; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Lillie Merrion of Swainsboro, GA; three nieces: Mary Merrion Connor of Swainsboro, GA, Mae Merrion Gilley (Anthony) of East Point, GA and Annette Merrion James (Tommy) of Swainsboro, GA; three nephews: Lucious Merrion III of Swainsboro, GA, Dennis Merrion (Annette) of Upper Marlboro, MD and Dwayne Merrion of Swainsboro, GA; and a host of cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many other loved ones.
