Obituary for Dorothy Mae Brown Lawrence
Dorothy Mae Brown Lawrence was a God-fearing, loving, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She transitioned on December 31, 2020 at age 90. Dorothy was born to Fannie and Willie Brown on February 21, 1930. She was the fourth of fourteen children. She attended the public schools in Emanuel County and joined the Rountree Island Baptist Church in 1943. After high school, Dorothy attended Savannah State College where she received a Bachelor in Elementary Education degree and later obtained a Specialist degree in Education from Fort Valley State University. On September 20, 1953, Dorothy married Eddie Lawrence and they have resided in Swainsboro, Georgia for over eighty years. They had three children: Donald (Don), Elaine, and Christopher (deceased). Dorothy was employed as an Elementary School Teacher in Twin City, Georgia then Swainsboro, Georgia where she retired in 1989 after 37 years of service. During her leisure time, Dorothy enjoyed spending time in the kitchen baking pound cakes and sewing. However, her community involvement over the years was also exceptional. She served in the following capacities:
Swainsboro Middle School and Swainsboro High School Band Booster Club (16 years); Georgia Education Association, Retired Teachers Assoc. of Georgia, and Golden Circle, Mary Neal Allen Chapter #317 (over 34 years) where she held the title of Past Associate Loyal Lady Ruler. She has also been a member of Olive Leaf Chapter # 295 for more than 59 years and served as Past Worthy Matron and Treasurer. In addition, Dorothy has been a member of the Rountree Island Baptist Church for 77 years where she faithfully served as President of the Busy Bee; Sunday School Treasurer; and an Usher for more than 50 years. Currently, she holds the title "Mother of the Church," of which she was elected in 1993. Mrs. Dorothy Lawrence leaves the following loved ones behind to cherish many fond memories: her husband of sixty-six years, Eddie Lawrence of Swainsboro, GA; two children: Donald Lawrence (Dr. Jeanette McGlothian Lawrence), and Dr. Elaine Lawrence Wynn (Raymond Wynn), both of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren: Terrance Wynn (Dr. Mirna Wynn), Powder Springs, GA; Justin Lawrence, Montgomery, AL; Taos Wynn, Tavia Lawrence, Prestin Lawrence (Emily), and lyasu Duse, all of Atlanta, GA; five great-grandchildren: Terrance F.G. Wynn, Alexander Wynn, Myla Wynn, Sophie Lawrence (Geneva Watford Lawrence), and Christian Wynn; four sisters: Doris McGahee, GA; Fannie Pearl Hicks (Freddie), FL; Helen Watkins (Ben), MS; and Vernell Brown, NV; one brother: Eliga Brown (Juanita), FL; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
