Obituary

Robert Emory Benjamin was born on September 6, 1952 to the late Reverend James Benjamin, Sr. and Mrs. Juanita Jones Benjamin, both of Claxton, Georgia. Robert graduated from Evans County High School in 1970. He furthered his education and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from then Savannah State College where he joined the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Robert was a proud member of the NAACP. Robert served five plus years with Savannah Police Department. He worked two plus years with Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia as a investigator with their campus police. Robert was a member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, Groveland, Georgia. Robert owned and operated his own business, BBA Associates in Atlanta, Georgia. Robert served as a City Council member from January 1998 through 2014, and as Mayor Pro-Tem during 2014. Claxton's Mayor Terry Branch said, "Robert served our city honorably and always had the citizens best interest at heart". He was joined in marriage to Lydia Walton for several years. He is preceded in death by two brothers: Johnny Lee Benjamin (Barbara Ann) and Stevenson Benjamin (Brenda). He leaves the following loved ones behind to treasure his life and his love: one daughter, Mrs. Dionne Michelle Benjamin Purser (Keith) of Charlotte, NC, Robert's second daughter Nekerige Black (Lee Brads, her fiancé) of Savannah, GA; two grandsons: Colin Alexander Zimmerman of Charlotte, NC and Adrian J. Crowley, Jr. of Savannah, Georgia; four loving sisters: Ms. Jackie Benjamin of Claxton, GA, Ms. Catherine B. Grant of Saint Marys, GA, Mrs. Carol B. Parker (Hillard) of Hampton, GA, and Mrs. Juanita Cordia B. Parker (Radford) of Albany, GA; Four brothers: Mr. James Benjamin, Jr. (Marilyn) of Orlando, FL, Deacon Barto Benjamin (Vera) of Hinesville, GA, Mr. Larry Benjamin (Maria) of Leland, NC and Mr. Gregory Benjamin of Stockbridge, GA; Three aunts: Mrs. Luretha Tillman and Mrs. Nita Bell Baker both of Claxton, GA, Mrs. Thelma Jones of Dublin, GA. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
